Alternative single-use laminate products for the healthcare sector

Body

Cellcomb manufactures disposable single-use laminate products for use in healthcare. However, in this case, the single-use approach is environmentally friendly because the materials are renewable and the end-product is compostable. Cellcomb provides a wide range of products, from protective sheets and bed linen to aprons that increase hygiene and patient safety. In addition to the healthcare sector, they are also involved in the food industry, where they produce absorbing pads for food trays that absorb excess leaks from food to prolong the shelf life and help mitigate food waste.

– Many disposable products are used for hygiene in healthcare. These products are mostly made from fossil-based plastics, but we believe that we must improve how we use materials. Cellcomb has therefore switched from using fossil-based materials to using renewable sources, says Henric Nedéus, Deputy Managing Director of Cellcomb.

The products are compostable and based on renewable raw materials. For instance, hygienic laminates on rolls are made from non-woven viscose and starch-based biofilm. These are commonly used in diapers, napkins and pads.

– We are also involved in the food industry, where we produce absorbing pads for food trays. This pad is placed at the bottom of the tray to absorb excess leaks from food in order to prolong the shelf life and help mitigate food waste. The pad is a pure cellulose mono-material design and is compostable and recyclable, which further reduces the environmental impact.

Compostable products are suitable alternatives for the food industry and the hygiene industry, but for healthcare, the material is often seen as a risk material as it can be contaminated with bacteria.

– Right now, composting is not a viable option for the healthcare sector, but it is essential to use renewables instead of fossil materials from an environmental perspective. However, I know that projects are currently underway to make composting possible in the future.

Environmental responsibility is key in Cellcomb’s production line, but customers need to increase demand to complete the transition to fully sustainable production. Production for a few orders is not sustainable in the long run, according to Henric Nedéus.

– A small-scale company like us can develop and produce products that fit well into one region or hospital. However, in a public procurement process, the customer must understand that both parties have a long-term commitment. It isn’t possible to produce just a few orders, and the customers need to understand that. We need more sustainable healthcare products everywhere, and the customers have to help us by asking for more sustainable products.
