Wood-based innovation to replace the use of fossil-based plastics

Body

Nordic pine from Swedish forests is an integral part in the innovative FibraQ technology. The innovation is a chemical treatment of wood fibres to make them more hydrophobic and compatible with different types of plastics. Wood-fibre based plastic has been around for many years, but their innovation ensures that industries can use it for many more products and applications. Biofibertech provides the wood-fibre based material FibraQ as a low-carbon alternative to fossil-based virgin plastics.

– The innovation is a chemical treatment of wood fibres to make them more hydrophobic and compatible with different types of plastic. Wood fibre-based plastic has been around for many years, but our innovation makes sure that industries can use it for many more products and applications, says Sara Georgsson, Director of End-use Development.

Biofibertech's material FibraQ are designed to be used for long-lasting plastic products, replacing fossil-based plastics in furniture, car parts, garbage bins, etc.

– We offer a sustainable alternative to fossil-based plastics. Instead of having a fully fossil-based material, you can replace a portion of the plastic with a sustainable alternative produced from the Swedish forest, says Sara Georgsson, Director of End-use Development.

The new technology has become a success. The investment company Jellyfish Invest decided to finance Biofibertech in 2020, and FibraQ was launched in 2021. There is high demand for biomaterial alternatives among brand owners, including manufacturers of cars, furniture and electronics.

– We can see enormous market potential, and we're talking to many brands in different sectors. There's a big demand for compounds and replacement products.

Biofibertech believes that long-lasting products that can be recycled are the best alternative for sustainable circularity.

– I think there is room for all innovations in the market, because they all are needed.

Biofibertech provides the 100% wood fibre-based material FibraQ as an environmental, low carbon alternative to fossil based plastics.
